Gami Chicken & Beer is almost certainly on your fried chicken radar. This crew’s made a name for its Korean-style chook, with bite-sized pieces slathered in or sided with a choice of house-made sauce… and, as the name suggests, you’ll find plenty of beer to wash it all down — including an exclusive house brew on tap.

Colonel Sanders who? Korean fried chicken is the new KFC, and Aussies can’t get enough. In 1996, four friends made a pact to open a business together. Ten years later, the first Gami Chicken & Beer opened. The rest is delicious, fried-chicken history.

The team at 2GB know good chicken when they taste it! Gami was excited to talk to Chris Smith about our journey to date, and how one of life’s greatest pleasures is a plateful of Korean fried chicken washed down with an ice-cold beer.

Gami’s story begins with four friends who met at university. Two went on to work as chefs, while two ventured into the corporate world. Years later, uni-day dreams of opening a business together became a reality, and Gami was born.

From the get-go, Gami wanted to do and be something different. To offer something unique and memorable. “Korea has a strong culture to share food and share joy,” tells co-founder Jun. This beautiful cultural tradition served as the perfect foundation for Gami’s core philosophy.

Four friends combined their experience in hospitality and business to build a fried-chicken empire. From ambitious students opening the first Gami in Carnegie to business moguls turning over $16.3M in 2018.

It all started with the desire to celebrate Korea’s tradition of sharing food and sharing joy. Gami’s founders recognised a synergy between Aussies’ penchant for pub grub and a pint, and Koreans’ love of catching up for fried-chicken and beer.

When it comes to where to go in and what to eat, Melburnians trust Broadsheet implicitly. So, when the always on-trend publisher lists Gami as some of Melbourne’s best fried chicken, the hungry hordes listen.

“No list of the best fried chicken in Melbourne would be complete without Gami Chicken & Beer.” We couldn’t agree more. Since the first Gami opened in 2006, people have fallen in love with our perfectly crispy fried chicken and equally crisp beers.

Gami tells the story of four friends with a strong vision. After opening their first store in 2006, Gami’s co-founders fine-tuned and perfected their approach. But one thing never changed: the founders’ commitment to core values. Gami never wavered from its vision to share uncomplicated, feel-good, high-quality food – and its success continues to grow.
